Majorca is the main island and together with Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, this archipelago is called the Balearic Islands.
Majorca is also the largest of these islands and covers almost 80% of the archipelago. The islands have a total population of 676'000, and approximately 379'000 of these live in the capital. Palma de Majorca is a capital that is both economically and culturally rich.
Majorca's population includes a percentage of foreigners who mainly originate from Germany and England and who have been captured by the island's charm.
In 1978, the Balearic Islands joined the 17 Spanish autonomous communities. The most spoken language in Majorca is obviously Spanish, but Catalan is also widely spoken.
The climate in Majorca is regarded as being a moderate Mediterranean climate with an annual average temperature of 17 degrees. |
